My professional life is centered in the computer science department at USC. There I teach undergraduates and graduate students, direct Ph.D. theses and carry on research. Lately I have focused my attention on search engines (hasn't everyone). I am teaching a new graduate level course on the subject, and focusing my efforts around the various algorithms for crawling, indexing and processing queries.
I continue to do outside consulting. Lately I have been acting as an expert witness on various landmark legal cases. I testified at the Yahoo vs. Google patent case and submitted declarations in the RIAA, MPAA vs. Kazaa, Grokster case. The latter was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of the RIAA and MPAA.
On the personal side, biking and racquetball are the ways I get my aerobic exercise. I do both with long time friends. And speaking of long time friends, Maryanne and I have been married almost 40 years and have 3 great children.
