Bio:

  • I am currently a postdoctoral fellow working with Dr. Chris Mattmann in the Computer Science Department within the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering. I came to USC with a background in physical geography and geocomputation. I completed my PhD with Dr. Tom Painter, with whom I worked to develop remote sensing products that infer additional energy absorbed by the global snowpack attributed to light absorbing impurites such as mineral dust.

    My work with the Snow Data Systems team at NASA/JPL sparked my curiosity in the computational backbone that enables scientists to ask big questions about our ever changing world.

    I live in Anchorage, Alaska with cute-as-a button daughter Ellie and my wonderful husband Evan Burgess, a wiz of a glaciologist and the worlds best person to go on an adventure with.

Open Source:

    I'm currently working on the integration of more scientific file types into Apache Tika , a fantastic open source tool that extracts metadata and structured text content from all sorts of documents. My work on this project is funded by the National Science Foundation Polar Cyberinfrastructure Program.

    I am a member of the Apache Software Foundation and an Apache TIka PMC member and have expanded Tika to extract metadata from NetCDF, Matlab, ENVI, and GRIB2 files.
