CSE new website FAQ for updating and creating pages

Q: What’s new?

A: Addressing the content-out-of-date problem in current web site, the new CSE web provide a better access control granularity to actively involve each research group to keep their web page fresh and up-to-date. In the new site, the web Administrator will grant the access control for each research/project directory to the corresponding group. Each research/project group can easily change their web page at anytime, from anywhere with an internet access, with access control protection.

Q: What’s the tool we should use?

A: The tool we should use to modify existing pages or to create new ones is Macromedia Dreamweaver. Modifying pages using Microsoft Word will create problems with the Style Sheets and therefore the fonts and functionality of certain pages will not work. If you have any questions please contact Maggie.

Q: What are to be put in the assigned directory for each project team on the CSE main website?

A: An index.html is REQUIRED in your assigned directory regardless of how you want to setup your project web pages. This page may be redirected to your own web pages, or you may create a homepage and then link to other pages (may be in other directories of your own).

Q: What are the options to setup project web pages?

A: You have three options:
a) If you would like to keep your old web pages, and wanted full access control to all your stuff, you may only create the index.html page in your assigned directory for CSE main website. You MUST make index.html to AUTOMATICALLY REDIRECT to your web pages.
b) If you would like to redo your web pages using our template, you are welcome to do so as well. Please refer to how to provided template for detail instruction of how to use the templates. All of you web pages must be created under your assigned directory, and there MUST be a page named index.html.
c) If your project is a new project, and there are no existing web pages, you will have to use the provide templates to create your project pages. Please refer to how to provided template for detail instruction of how to use the templates. All of you web pages must be created under your assigned directory, and there MUST be a page named index.html.

Q: How to redirect index.html to other web pages automatically?

A: If you are using Javascript, add these lines in <head> tag:
<script type="text/javascript">
  window.location= “YOUR WEB PAGE URL
</script>

Q: How to use the provided templates?

A: Please refer to How to use template for detail instructions on using the template.

Q: What to do to link product to the TOOLS section in the main web site?

A: You need to make an anchor point at the section where others can download your product/tool. And send the anchor with its complete URL (e.g.,http://sunset.usc.edu/myproject/download.html#download_anchor) to webmaster.
