"Processes for COTS-Based Systems"

Speaker:  Tricia Oberndorf, SEI

LA ACM

Abstract

The development and maintenance of software systems composed largely of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products is significantly different from creating software systems from scratch.  Too many people approach a COTS-based system project as though the same processes they have used for traditional system development will continue to work and that the only difference is that they’ll just “get the implementations from the marketplace” rather than building them.  This misconception has led many projects into disastrous results.  There is a tremendous need for the articulation of a process that can be used to achieve success with the creation of COTS-based systems.  This presentation reveals the framework for such a process, called the Assembly/Acquisition Process for COTS-based Systems (A/APCS, pronounced “apex”), that has resulted from extensive work with real programs, mostly in the DoD.  The presentation includes a high-level view of the overall process framework as well as detailed views of the parts of the highest level and its more detailed realization as the Evolutionary Process for Integrating COTS-based systems (EPIC).

Tricia Oberndorf

Tricia Oberndorf is a Senior Member of the SEI Technical Staff. She participates in the COTS-Based Systems Initiative, concentrating on the use of COTS products and the investigation of acquisition, management, and open system issues.  She is co-author of “Managing Software Acquisition: Open Systems and COTS Products.”  She was a principal in the development of a framework for necessary COTS-based systems activities.  Much of her career was spent investigating integration and open systems questions in the context of computer-aided software engineering environments.  Before coming to the SEI, she was with the Navy for over 19 years.
