What Will It Look Like?

Please remember to bring your parking ticket for validation

Abstract

The Software Capability Maturity Model (SW-CMM), and its five level scale, has become a de facto standard for software engineering. It is estimated that over 3000 organizations worldwide are using the SW-CMM to assess and improve their processes. The latest revision to the SW-CMM, version 2.0, was originally planned to be published in the summer of 1998. This release has been delayed by the decision to release SW-CMM v2.0 under the CMM Integration (CMMI) project. This project is a joint government, industry, and SEI initiative to combine the various CMMs covering different disciplines into a common framework.
(See http://www.sei.cmu.edu/cmm/cmms/cmms.integration.html for details.)

As a result of recent communications with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) and the CMMI Steering Group, priority has been given to the earliest possible release of SW-CMM v2.0. In light of this decision, this talk will address:

  • How the CMMI project affects SW-CMM v2.0
  • When SW-CMM v2.0 will be released
  • What SW-CMM v2.0 will look like
  • How current assessment methods and training are affected
  • How the public can obtain draft copies and provide feedback
