Abstract

A Process Engineering methodology has been developed that incorporates the disciplines of systems engineering and change management. A Process Engineering Center was established at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) that provided internal consulting to projects at JPL, California Institute of Technology, and NASA in process engineering /reengineering. At Glendale Community College a Process Engineering Program has been established to reengineer both academic and administrative processes. Specifically, the process engineering methodology provides for:

  • Leadership in process engineering/reengineering concepts, approaches, and methods
  • Process Team training
  • Process analysis, modeling, and simulation
  • Benchmarking for industry best practices methods and tools
  • Process metrics
  • Reengineering program and process monitoring techniques and metrics
  • Change management support
  • Coordination with Information Technology and Human Resources

The speakers will give several examples of processes that were re-engineered using these methods.

The work described in this talk was carried out at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and at Glendale Community College.

Biography

Kristin Bruno is Dean of Information and Technology Services at Glendale Community College where she is applying process engineering methodology to administrative and academic processes. Her experience includes public school teaching at the 7-8 grade level;

Information Technology development, support, and management at the Hewlett Packard Company, including management of the development of an internal world-wide sales quotation system; and Research and Development in Information Technology at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory / California Institute of Technology, including analysis of the errors in the human computer interface in spacecraft operations, and, most recently, the application of process engineering and workflow technology to JPL missions and Caltech business processes.

Linda Welz is the manager of the Process Engineering Program at Glendale Community College. This program is examining both instructional and administrative processes. She has over 17 years of experience in systems and software engineering including database development and user support at Chevron Geosciences; software and systems development in administration and student systems at the University of California Berkeley; software assurance for the Deep Space Network Administration System at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); and systems development and error analysis for flight systems mission operations at JPL. Ms. Welz was one of the leaders in the process engineering program at JPL and the California Institute of Technology. In this role she developed a process engineering methodology and supported teams implementing the methodology in the areas of acquisition, flight project development, and human resources.
